Oblivion

Oblivion (1994) – It’s an overacted cheeseball, sure, but with an all-star B-movie cast and a script from Peter David that knows exactly what it has to work with, it’s a reasonably good time nonetheless. 6

Skyfall

Skyfall (2012) – The action is satisfactory, but the film stands out in that does an impressive job addressing both its aging characters and its aging franchise (and Bardem is one of the better Bond villains in quite a while); Skyfall is overlong, the dialogue isn’t always great, and everything moves along rather tidily, but even so, this is the best Bond since GoldenEye. 7

Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing (1982) – The dialogue is bad, maybe even on purpose, and everything else – the script, the action, the editing, the creature(s) – is B-movie cheese all the way; and yet it’s not entertainingly bad, as Craven bores with a lack of suspense, atmosphere, and pacing; in short, the film doesn’t have much going for it beyond Barbeau’s bouncing bosoms and the scene-stealing Reggie Batts (in his only film appearance). 4

Hero at Large

Hero at Large (1980) – It’s interesting in that it’s the earnestly optimistic sire of modern-day thematic opposites like Kick-Ass, and it’s passably entertaining for the most part, but the chick-flick romance is eye-rolling and the final act isn’t very satisfying; bonus points, though, for quite possibly the worst superhero costume ever. 5

Small Soldiers

Small Soldiers (1998) – The effects have held up impressively well, it’s got quite a good voice cast, and while the script is heavy-handed in all areas and not a little bit dumb, there are some strong story elements and themes; it’s passable as is, but one wonders if it couldn’t have worked much better if written for an adult audience (it’s not the kiddie film it looks like anyway). 6

Flight

Flight (2012) – Some aspects are very well done, but the script is corny, contrived, and clichéd, and the film could scarcely be less subtle if it had been created for viewing at AA meetings (even the soundtrack is a brick to the head); Denzel, not surprisingly, does a good job holding this overlong and disappointing film together. 5
