G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) – Going full cartoon was the right move, but it’s just a little too dumb; it does a nice job juggling so many characters, though. 5

  1. I just watched GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and I think your approach is extremely well-balanced given the bizarre range of opinions about the movie on the internet. It's based on an 80's cartoon where planes blow up and the pilots miraculously don't die - every time. What were we honestly expecting? I agree that the character balancing was actually remarkably good given how many characters were in the cartoon. Certainly dumb, dialogue is at times awful, special effects were a little too obviously CG (I like gravity to look like gravity; it reminded me of recent George Lucas CG), but who was expecting a movie that pushed the boundaries of political commentary, or was grounded in a plausible international anti-terrorism force? Comparisons with Team America World Police, or accusations of fascist propaganda are just inane. I concur with your rating.
