Les Misérables (1998) – This is a perfectly respectable
adaptation with some good performances, although it often feels like it’s just
going through the motions and the pivotal romance is underdeveloped to the
point of being broken; in short, while it’s generally satisfying and it has
some emotional impact, it lacks the punch one expects from a story this
powerful. 6
