Metropolis (1927) – It’s melodramatic, certainly, and the
plotting is convenient to the point of silliness, but it’s earnest in its
message, and with a plethora of striking images and a cinematic influence that’s
still profoundly evident almost 100 years later, this piece of glorious German
expressionism remains worthy of its iconic status. 7
