Star Wars* (1977) – Lucas successfully adapts The Hidden Fortress’s
template to create a cultural phenomenon that’s become one of
fiction’s most enduringly beloved universes; the film gets a little silly at
times, the plot minutiae can be sloppy, the dialogue clunks here and there, and
Luke’s kind of a whiner, but it also brings to the table a phenomenal score
(including one of the most instantly recognizable themes ever), fantastic
practical effects, one of the most badass villains of all time, and, although not used to great effect here,
the awesomeness of lightsabers. 8
