The Empire Strikes Back* (1980) – This is a superior sequel that
features better character emphasis than its glorious predecessor, with excellent action
sequences that escalate to a tremendous climax and a magnificent twist; the
film also balances its darker tone with the effective use of humor, it expands
the Star Wars universe in creative
and satisfying ways, and it’s got more great music from Williams; yes indeed,
the one Lucas didn’t script or direct is not only the best of the bunch, it’s
also one of my ten favorite films of all time. 9
